Recent news out of internet has home consumers worried that their Toaster could be vulnerable to internet hackers. As of 2020 everything which involves the home market is smart, nothing is dumb anymore. Internet connectivity which was once dedicated to a single PC and maybe laptop, now supports over 20 IoT smart devices; light bulbs, door knobs, door cameras, home cameras, stoves, fridges, cars, phones, and yes even toasters.
The 1990’s home internet security thought only centered around one thing, antivirus. As long as you had McAfee, Norton on your system you could prevent 90% of internet based attacks. This is where we all forgot about what if things progress and get more connected. Nope instead we were more concerned with not wanting the virus quarantine pop up and be happy to sit in internet safety ignorance. Unfortunately the future is here and the single solution for security does not work, actually its worst because its free ( limited blocking, limited updates, computers only).
Lots of research has been conducted since the influx of “Smart Technologies” into the home market via smart devices and some of the statistics paint a dark picture for home internet security. In 2025 the following are key stats to pay attention to for you and your families online security
